Kill the Captains

Jeanie Farmer

A brief word with Paul, the drummer of self– proclaimed ‘psychedelic art-rock band’: ‘Kill the Captains’.

Can you tell me what kind of band 'Kill the Captains' is? How would you describe yourselves?

We're a psychedelic art-rock band with a sense of humour. We play weird drone music with pop hooks and make tits out of ourselves on stage...it's a hoot!

'Kill the Captains'- Tell us a little bit about the name you chose for your band.

We were going to be called "Captains of Industry", but we discovered that there was a record label which went by that name...not having the stomach for lengthy litigation, the name "Kill the Captains" was suggested.

It stuck.

Tell me about your role in the band. How much creative input do you have towards a finished song?

Paul (vocals/ guitar) and Leon (vocals/ guitar) come up with most of the melodic hooks. Yoz (the bass player) and I are the glue which holds it all together. They will come to a practice with an idea, we will often jam it in an frenzied, epic overblown way until it gels.

How long have you been playing together?

We've been together for about a year, but only gigging since December, as Paul was finishing a Chemistry PHD and dreaming in molecules.

How does this band compare to other bands you have previously been in?

It's a lot easier...Leon and I were in a band called Porlock which produced an album which we're incredibly proud of, but we never really delivered on stage. The music was very fastidiously arranged, and there were too many shy bedroom geniuses involved. Playing with the Captains is a much more instantaneous thrill.

How does playing the drums fit into your life? What role does it have?

Playing the drums is very cathartic for me. Flailing around and hitting things after a day at work puts it all into perspective. Playing music in general is a shot in the arm, and a way of sharing wonderful things with my pseudo-family.

Tell me what you do when you're not playing the drums.

I write and perform poetry, and think about playing the drums.

Check out MySpace for more information about the band, up and coming gigs and even a wee listen.

Kill the Captains are playing: 8th October at The Runaway Girl.

Opus Productions

Peter Roberts

An atmosphere, for musicians and poets to perform, has been created at the Riverside Cafe Bar with the help of Opus Productions.

Opus say that they are for the positive and the deliberate and this ethos is carried into their live performances and so every Sunday night, through candle flame, you can watch some of Sheffield’s best live performers take to the stage. Having been to every Sunday night at the Riverside since hearing about it, we can’t help but agree.

The evenings usually start with a poem or two by the resident poet and organiser James Lock (see overleaf) and then follows a multitude of diverse musical and spoken word. If you enjoy acoustic guitars, soloing violinists, singing, spoken word or creativity in general (!?!) then come down and pull up a chair.

The bar itself is situated next to the river (hence the name!) on Mowbray Street, and has an instant ‘good vibe’. Original artwork from some of Opus’ artists is strewn about the small stage and gives a feeling of the inventiveness of the night and imaginative people that dare to perform. Opus’ nights seem to be steeped in talent which is a testament both to the efforts that have created this night and the wealth of Sheffield’s performing abilities.

We salute you!!
